Geography

The Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as "Siam" , is located in the heart of South-EastAsia. Its area of 200,000 square miles is similar to that of France. Thailand consists of 5 parts : Central, Eastern, Northeastern, Northern and Southern. It is divided into 76 provinces. Its neighbouring countries are Malaysia in the South, Cambodia and Laos in the East and Myanmar (Burma) in the West.

Climate

Being located close to the equator, Thailand has a tropical climate. It can be divided into 3 seasons : Rainy Season (from late May to mid-October), Cool Season (late October to mid-February) and the Hot Season (from late February to mid - May). The temperature normally ranges from 25-30 degrees celsius.

Society

Thailand has a population of 60 million people. More than 90% are Buddhist. Thailand is a Kingdom with, King Bhumiphol Adulyadej who has been reigning for over 50 years under the Chakri Dynasty. He is extremely popular and most respected by the Thai people. Pictures of himself and the royal family can be found in every Thai house.

Health

No vaccines are curently required. For those who are going to make trips to the rainforest areas, we would suggest a malaria phrophylaxum.

Money

The Thai currency is the Baht. Money changers can be found in all tourist places. The money changers at Bangkok's Don Muang Airport offer 24-hours-service. Bank are open from 10.00 am to 04.00 pm in the provinces. The banks often have separate exchange booths that have longer opening hours and do also open on holidays. Major credit cards like MasterCard, VISA or American Express are widely accepted.

Shopping

Thailand has earned itself a reputation as a shopper's paradise. Especially well known are precious and semi - precious stones, silk and cotton wares, handmade handicrafts and leather products. Anyway, we would suggest to buy at reputable shops only to avoid any kind of disappointment.
